The development of stethoscope

Before 1816, doctors used “Direct Auscultation” to diagnose. “Direct Auscultation” refers to the doctor close contact with the patient's chest to obtain the cardiac and respiratory sound, regardless of gender. However, it changed completely in 1816.

René Laennec was born in the golden age of French medicine. He was a talented doctor, but he has never been hired by any French government hospital. Until 1816, he got the opportunity to work in a government hospital. In one day, René diagnosed a noble lady, but he could not put his ear directly close to the woman's chest due to his shyness. When he was so distressed, he suddenly thought of using paper to roll up for hearing the heartbeat. René found that it not only avoids embarrassment, but also can hear the sound clearly. When he came back home, he remodeled the instrument and made the world's first stethoscope from wood. He named the instrument “stethoscope”: (stetho- + -scope, "chest scope"), and the prototype of the stethoscope was born.

In 1851, an Irish doctor invented a binaural stethoscope and bid farewell to the era of  auscultation by one ear. In 1852, George Philip Cammann perfected the stethoscope of both ears, and this design continues to the present. Stethoscopes are a symbol of doctors. After over 200 years of progress, more and more types of stethoscopes have been invented, such as single stethoscope, dual stethoscope, fetal stethoscope, electronic stethoscope and so on.
